In Japan, several thousand kinds of ingredients are approved as feed ingredients for cosmetics, out of which approximately 100 feed ingredients could allegedly cause allergies. Why a certain ingredient is added? What about its safety? With a view to answering such consumers’ concerns, the government established a legislation that stipulates that all ingredients used in cosmetics must be explicitly indicated. Some consumers are not certain about the criteria for choosing cosmetics. Other consumers are getting more nature-oriented. Against these backgrounds, the demand for botanical ingredients is increasing in the cosmetics field, and the number of crude drug extracts mixed into cosmetics is sharply increasing.
